Activity on Arrow (Arrow network)

Using a simple example:

Task ID Task Description Duration Prerequisites
1 Clear land 14 none
2 Lay foundations 28 1
3 Build walls 42 2
4 Electrical wiring 21 3
5 Plastering 21 4, 8
6 Landscaping 28 2
7 Interior work 35 5, 8
8 Roof 14 3

In the above table we have described a number of tasks, their IDs, their duration (in days) and what tasks must be completed before they can begin (prerequisites). This is the sort of information we can get from a Gantt chart but is not how we think in an activity on arrow (AoA) network because we need to think in terms of completing activities (what are our goals?). These completed activities can be called nodes, which are joined by activities (arrows).

Lets rearrange this table for AoA :

Node ID Node Description
1 Land cleared
2 Foundation laid
3 Walls built
4 Wiring finished
5 Walls plastered
6 Landscaping finished
7 Interior work completed
8 Roof finished

We now have a set of goals or objectives that we can monitor and say when they are finished. How do we represent these in a diagram?
