Systematic Strategic PlanningStrategy does matter, people can come up with sensible plans and then carry out a plan of action that can stand up to market forces and triumph over them. The strategic goals and objectives reflect the social system in which the strategy is being made. Systematic strategy is not about maximizing profit, rather about enforcing a system based on perhaps nationalistic pride or ego. They will deviate from traditional paths because they think those rules are wrong, markets can be manipulated, society has more important objectives than profit. Social systems mould the actions and rules that systematic planners follow. Firms differ according to the social and political systems they exist within and are molded by the cultural rules of their environment. This means the differences between countries' social systems and that changes within the country are important factors. Whitley (1991) states that the culture/society of a nation is responsible for controlling the type of business structure that is successful especially where it is homogenous and there are large differences with neighbours. Of course, within one nation there can be a number of strategies based perhaps on class or religion. Multi-national companies can retain their original character by keeping domestic personnel in top management positions.
