What are the
traditional approaches to strategic planning?
From Strategy - does it
matter?, the author describes four generic approaches
to strategic planning within an organization:
Classical - strategy
is a process of calculation and analysis designed
to maximize long term gain.
Evolutionary -
because the world is an unpredictable, dangerous
place, the companies that happen to develop a
profitable strategy will survive.
Processual -
strategy emerges from a process of bodging,
learning and compromise so it does not matter if
the initial strategy is 'right'.
Systematic -
maximizing profit is not necessarily the best
strategy, there are other things that are more
important to the company.
